The Avengers: We Have A Tiger – Part Twelve

At the request of the amazing erinkenobi2893, I’ve decided to post this Avengers fan fiction I wrote a while back. It’s quite long (twenty-eight pages) so it’s going to be split into quite a few parts. I hope that you will all enjoy it!

*DISCLAIMER: This story is based off of the end of The Avengers. There are illusions to spoilers for said movie, so read with caution, but most are not major. Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, are not taken into account, and have not been watched by the author. That said, enjoy.

Thor landed on top of a huge building, not even sure what it was, his eyes focused on the warehouse in front of him. Every door, every window was either boarded up or closed, and probably locked. How was he supposed to get in? He jumped down from the building, landing with a thud and sending up a cloud of dust. He began to walk around the building, sizing it up.

A hand gently touched his shoulder, and he spun around. His eyes narrowed and he took a step backward. “Leave me. You are lucky I’m letting you live now. After what you did to me.”

“Please don’t be sore, Thor,” she whispered softly. “I didn’t want to. Really I didn’t.” He arched an eyebrow at her suspiciously. “I didn’t want to do this, either.”

A hand gripped Thor’s arm and spun him around. Loki’s familiar grin was right in his face. “Thank you, my dear Aila,” he sneered, his eyes on Thor’s angry face.

Thor turned to the girl, who had moved off a few paces and leaned against a tree to watch. “You betrayed me,” he snarled.

Aila opened her mouth to reply, but Loki waved his hand impatiently. “Do not try to stall, Thor. Your friends are inside, and, well…” He flashed a crooked grin. “We have been having a little fun. You would not want it to stop being fun, would you?”

Thor glared at Loki. “You need not do this, brother. We can—”

“I must,” Loki said, interrupting Thor. He looked at Aila. “Aila darling, why don’t you go back inside. We may be a while, and I certainly don’t want you to witness this and ruin your beautifully innocent mind.”

“Darling…” Thor hissed. He dove for his brother, fury and hatred bubbling up inside of him, swinging around his hammer. Loki ducked and avoided it. He wrenched his brother’s arm around and unsheathed yet another dagger.

“If this is how you want to play…” Loki began.

Thor threw his hammer, sending it flying straight into his brother’s stomach. The force sent Loki and the hammer crashing into the wall of the warehouse. Loki leapt up the instant he stopped moving and charged Thor, giving him a gash on his arm. “You’ve no hope for your hammer now,” he panted as he pressed his knife to Thor’s throat. He smiled. “Your hammer is now presumably stuck to the same magnet as your friend’s weapons. And the magnet attracts all metals,” he added, seeing the doubt on his brother’s face.

“Oh, please, boys,” Aila pleaded in her silky sweet voice. “You’re going to give us a bad name.”

“I have nothing to do with you,” Thor snarled. “I should have learned by now not to trust Midgard women.”

Loki smiled. “Aila, dear, if I’m giving you and me a bad name, it will only last as long as my dear brother’s life.” He grinned at Thor, the knife still at his adopted brother’s throat. “Which won’t be very long. Darling, maybe you should go inside.”

“I didn’t mean us as a couple,” Aila said sweetly, drawing nearer. “I meant all of us, as Asgardians.” The two men froze, taken aback.

“You’re not an Asgardian,” Loki said. “You told me yourself, and I met your mother.”

“You are right,” Aila said, stepping nearer. “But you are wrong. I told you, and you met my mother. But you didn’t meet my father. I am not Asgardian, but I’m half-Asgardian. My father was from Asgard.”

The brothers were stunned into silence for almost a full minute before Loki spoke. “That is of no consequence now.” He fixed his eyes on his brother. “If you were not such an immediate threat, I would enjoy taking you inside and making you watch the torture and death of each of your friends. As you are and immediate threat, and immediate solution must be performed.” He pushed his brother up against a shriveled tree. “Once and for all,” he hissed in his brother’s ear.

Thor closed his eyes tightly, feeling the coldness of the dagger against his throat. And then a thud, and the dagger was gone. He opened his eyes and saw Loki wrestling with a tiger. Aila? They rolled around on the dying grass, both of them snarling, but one a human snarl, and the other not. He knew he should head for the warehouse while Loki was distracted, but he was frozen in place. He couldn’t move. Why would Aila try to save his life?

A roar of pain echoed across the field, clearly coming from the tiger. Thor felt the urge to help, but he felt helpless without his hammer. He took an unsure step forward, but didn’t move any farther. The tiger – Aila – finally pinned Loki down. Red was mixed in with the orange and black fur, but Loki also had his wounds. He was still struggling, but Aila had him pinned perfectly. She turned back into herself, and Loki went limp as she knocked him unconscious.

Thor still couldn’t move as he watched Aila push herself up off of Loki and gaze down at him, her hand clutching her side. She glanced in Thor’s direction and he finally found the power to move, grasping her other arm. “Why did you do that?” he asked in a whisper, towering over her.

“Because I had to choose,” she said softly. “I had to lose either my freedom, or…” She averted her gaze. “Or you,” she whispered. She turned away from him and walked to the warehouse as he stood staring after her, shocked.

Banner groaned as he woke up. His head ached horribly, and he couldn’t remember what had happened. He saw a pair of pants lying next to him and figure out that he’d Hulked out, but other than that, he couldn’t remember anything. He yanked on the pants and sat up, his head throbbing as he did so. He was in a huge cage. Hulk-size, he thought. His back throbbed, and by turning his head, he could just barely see the claw marks. The memories came flooding back. The tiger. The warehouse.

He turned around and felt the room shift out of focus. Whoever knocked him out certainly hit him hard enough. The room came into focus, and for a second he thought he was going to pass out at the sight. Natasha, Clint, and Steve were all tied to metal chairs that were somehow hanging on the wall close to him. He could see a huge knot on Clint’s forehead, Steve had a nasty looking cut on his cheek, and Natasha’s arm was twisted back at a horrible angle. They all looked like they’d been through a war, but Stark, whose chair was standing in the middle of the warehouse, looked like he was enjoying himself, even though he looked just as bad. Loki was standing in front of him, pacing back and forth.

“Oh, leave him alone, Stark, come on,” Steve called out. His voice was hoarse and tired.

Loki tossed a dagger in Steve’s direction, which sliced deeply into Steve’s arm and clattered to the floor. Banner felt anger burn hot inside of him as he saw an expression of pain flash across Steve’s face. But the cage was solid, and Hulking out wouldn’t do him any good.

Loki turned back to Stark. “You insulting, sarcastic…” his voice trailed off as he traced his larger knife along Stark’s neck. Loki stabbed a third dagger through Stark’s shoulder, pinning it to the chair. Stark clenched his teeth together, sweat on his forehead. “Oh, look,” Loki said, casting a glance in Banner’s direction. “The monster awakes. Do not worry, Banner. You are next. You may find I am not quite as puny as you think.”

Banner winced at the reference. At that moment, a man burst into the room, followed by none other than Aila. “I thought you said there’d be horrible violence,” she said to Loki teasingly.

Loki frowned at her. “Leave, Aila. Now.”

“Sir,” the man who had entered the room with Aila said awkwardly. “I, well, uh…” he sighed. “Thor’s here.”

Loki’s face darkened. “Aila, leave.” He turned to the man. “Where is Thor?”

“He’s heading this way. He landed on a nearby building, and we think he’s coming this way,” the man replied.

“I’ll meet him out front or around back, whichever way he comes,” Loki said, smirking. “My brother. He never learns, does he?”

“No, he doesn’t,” Aila agreed.

Loki glared at her. “I said—”

“Loki, just shut up and get moving, will you? I’ll be… quite a big help,” Aila said, a sly smile on her lips.

Loki sighed. “Whatever you wish, my dear.”

“I can’t believe this,” Fury muttered, pacing back and forth behind his desk. “I just can’t believe this.”

“Of all the stupid things…” Stark growled. He turned to face Thor getting right up in his face. “If you hadn’t been so stupid—”

“Guys,” Cap interrupted, putting a hand on Stark’s arm. “Really. That doesn’t matter now. And, Stark, you may want to remember that Thor’s stronger than you when you’re not suited up. Just a thought.” Stark turned around and plopped in a chair still grumbling to himself under his breath.

“Her last words were obviously meant to apply to Thor’s early statement,” Fury said, turning to face them. “You said that she didn’t look like she’d work for Loki, and you also said that she didn’t look like a threat, so when she said that looks can be deceiving, her meaning was clear. She works for Loki, and she is a threat.”

“Well, duh,” Stark snapped. “Anyone who goes riding off on a hovercraft thingy with Loki certainly works for him, and anyone who can morph into a tiger is a threat.”

Fury glared at him. “Stark, we need to cooperate to be able to figure all of this out. First off. Does anyone think they’d be able to fight at close range with a tiger?”

Hawkeye snorted. “Count me out.” Natasha nodded in agreement.

Cap shook his head. “I don’t think I could.”

Stark looked doubtful. “Possibly, but I’m not sure. Even in the suit, I’d be outweighed, and possibly outsized.”

“I might, but I doubt it,” Thor put in.

“You’re not going anywhere near that kid,” Stark growled, glaring in Thor’s direction. Cap put his hand on Stark’s arm, warning him.

“I think I could.”

Everyone turned to face Banner. He shrugged. “Well, if we’re talking about weight, the, uh, other guy would probably be a pretty good match for a tiger.”

Fury contemplated him. “The Hulk would probably be the best match,” he agreed slowly. “Are you sure you’d want to risk that, Banner?”

Banner shrugged again. “I don’t have much to lose.”

Fury nodded. “Well, then, if we have any concerns with the tiger, Banner will be the one to handle it. If needed all of the rest of you will help him. Got it?” Everyone nodded. “All right, let’s all take a break. All we can do now is try to figure out where Loki’s going to strike next, or wait for him to move.” He sighed. “Unfortunately, I think we’re going to have to use the second tactic.”

Thor woke up early, so early that the sun was just starting to peek over the horizon. He couldn’t fall back asleep so he decided he might as well get ready for his day. After putting on his armor and grabbing his hammer he wandered down the hallway, not sure where he was going. No one else seemed to be awake yet.

He found himself in front of the cell area. He sighed and pushed open the door. What was it about this girl that drew him to her?

He walked quietly down the hallway, past cells with sleeping prisoners in them, and reached Aila’s cell. She was lying on the bed, her knees tucked into her chest, her face peaceful as she slept. He could see where tears had dried on her cheeks and felt a huge pain in his chest. He stared at her. Why did he long so much to pull her to his chest and assure her that everything would be okay? He shook his head. She looked so frail on that cot, behind that horrible glass. She hadn’t even done anything. He unlocked the door.

Aila leaped to her feet, her eyes wide as he stepped into the cell. Then her eyes narrowed. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her suspicion and her curiosity clearly fighting against each other.

Thor felt his breath catch in his throat. Those blue, tear-stained eyes… He turned around, fighting for control of his breathing and stepped out of the cell, purposefully leaving the door open behind him. He started to head down the hallway, then turned and looked back at her. She was staring at him. He gave a slight nod, and Aila stepped cautiously to the doorway and headed down the hall and out of the cell area. Thor headed back towards his room, wondering how, and why, he had done that.

———-

“That was a waste of time,” Cap grumbled as they headed towards a side entrance at the SHIELD building. “We didn’t learn anything at all.”

“Sure we did,” Stark responded. “We figured out that Loki blew up the Stark Tower, and completely destroyed it.”

“We already knew that,” Cap reminded him.

“We only suspected it,” Stark responded opening the door. “Now we know for sure.”

“Shush,” Banner said. “It’s still early. We don’t want to bother anybody – oof!” Someone hurrying around the corner ran right into him.

“I’m sorry,” the blond woman apologized and moved to go around them.

“Hold it,” Cap said, grabbing her arm. “What are you doing? You’re the kid we caught in the hallway. Fury said he’d keep you locked up until we got here, and he doesn’t know we’re back yet.”

She glared at him. “I’m not a kid,” she snarled, trying to twist her arm out of Steve’s grip.

“Nope, you’re coming with us to the meeting room,” Stark said. “I’ll let Fury know we’re here.”

About twenty minutes later, Fury and the Avengers were back in the same meeting room once again. Aila was sitting in a chair, her wrists tied behind her back with a belt; the only thing Cap could find on short notice.

“All right, what’s going on? How did you get out of the cell?” Fury asked, his gaze fixed on Aila. Her jaw was clenched and her lips pursed. Clint could be heard growling under his breath. Fury threw up his hands and turned to the others. “Does anybody here know anything about this?” Everyone shook their heads. “Aila?” Fury asked. “If you don’t cooperate…” He let the threat hang in the air.

She tilted her head to the side, her blue eyes fixed on Fury. “Someone let me out,” she said sweetly.

Fury turned to the Avengers. “Who let her out?” he growled.

Thor took a deep breath. “I did.”

“Are you crazy?” Natasha asked.

“What if she’s working for Loki?” Fury asked, anger clouding his eyes. “Why would you let her out?”

Thor stood up and motioned to Aila. “Look at her! Does she look like she would work for my brother? He believes women are weak, and has no interest in them. She was probably part of a dare, something stupid. Does she even look like a threat?”

“That doesn’t matter,” Fury replied. “She was unauthorized to be in SHIELD, and—” He broke off as Aila stood up. Her eyes were fixed on him, narrowed. Natasha gasped as swirls of green began to appear in Aila’s eyes. The green color took over as tinges of orange traveled down her blond hair. Nothing happened for a second after her eyes turned completely green and her hair completely orange. The next instant, Aila’s body writhed as she yanked her hands – no, paws – free from the rope. A tiger now stood there, in their meeting room.

No one moved, struck with fear, surprise, and confusion, as the tiger stared at Fury for another moment, then loped over to the huge windows. One swipe of its giant paw, and one of the panes of glass shattered. The tiger turned back to them and morphed back into Aila, back to her blue eyes and blond hair. “Looks can be deceiving,” she said, eyes locked with Thor, before turning and leaping out of the window.

All of them ran to the windows, looking out. Aila was falling straight down. Hawkeye brought out his bow and prepared to jump down to save her, but Natasha grabbed his arm. A small, motorcycle-like flying machine zoomed around the corner of the SHIELD building, catching Aila. It circled back around, higher this time, and closer to the window, until they could see the pilot.

“Loki,” Cap snarled.

The pair flew out of sight.
