Hey, everyone! As you may or may not know, I am horrible at naming inventions. Horrible. Almost as bad as I am at coming up with them. But, nevertheless, I actually did come up with a couple of inventions, and I’m looking for some help naming them.
First off, there is the… weird saddle-shaped flying machine. I am currently calling it a “transporter”, but I’m looking for a catchier *cough*smarter-sounding*cough* name. Basically, it’s the first flying machine the fantasy world I’m writing in has ever seen. It’s shaped like an English saddle (more specifically, a dressage saddle… if anyone knows what dressage is…)…
…like so, except it’s solid metal, and it goes down farther (the size of a 5.563′ teen guys’ legs, basically), and it the sides go all the way back. And… um, it flies. Any name ideas would be greatly appreciated. 😀
Second, I have these cell-phone-like devices. Like miniature Skype devices. They’re used to communicate. And it’s pretty easy for me to explain what they look like, because they’re basically pocket watches that have been repurposed and refitted with a small circular screen and a little buttons. And… I already edited a picture of what the outside looks like.
Help! Any ideas? Share below! What do you think of the inventions (and my pocket watch Photoshop engraving skills)? Do you know what dressage is? Comment!
I know what dressage is, and I like your ideas and electronic engraving skills. People name inventions after what they do. Think about flight, transportation, air, movement and use those terms in your name. What do they already have at the time of the invention? That’s where the Iron Horse or horseless carriage came from. Depending on what exists, it might be an air car, air boat, or Pegasus. If it looks like a saddle, the name might incorporate that. Sky saddle?
A Skype style watch could be tele-something. You see the other party, so vision could become part of the name. Most inventions were not named by a think tank. If you’d actually patented this item, what would you call it? Do they have the telegraph, maybe it’s the videograph.

Thank you! That’s very helpful! I like the name Sky Saddle. That would be good, with the alliteration. Thanks! 🙂 I’ll have to remember this next time I’m trying to come up with another invention name, as well.

Let me be the first to speak up… Great job with the Photoshop! Nope, I’ve never heard of dressage. So I really don’t have any intelligent-sounding names. Just the basics like “pocket video” or “video watch” or “personal communication device.” When I need to make up certain words for things, I Google (whatever the thing is) + “name generator”. If there is nothing like the thing I am naming, I look up the closest thing. So for example, I looked up airplane name generator and I got http://fantasynamegenerators.com/airplane-names.php#.VLIVDSvF954. Also, I looked up “computer program name generator” and got http://www.dotomator.com/web20.html. And when I see what they have, then I often modify their names to suit what I need. Good luck!

Thanks!!! 😀 I’ll go try that. I used name generators to help me come up with a few character names and some country names as well. They’re always really helpful. 🙂

Alas, I am the worst of the worst when it comes to naming anything, so I cannot help you. However I do like your Photoshop skills. They’re probably better than mine. 😉

ooh! ooh! I know what dressage is! 😀 ahem. anyway… I’m rubbish at naming inventions, I can name just about anything else, but not inventions so I don’t think I can be of much help to you in that department 😛 great Photoshop skills though! 🙂

Thank you! I’m surprised at how many of my followers actually know what dressage is; I don’t mention my horsey life much on here. 😛

The former-pocket-watch-device could be called a handspark. I don’t know what to call the flying machine.
